Pattern of a Dying World. Show Me
I've been asking a question.
Show me.
Show me we can change. Show me we can stop. Show me we can repair what we've broken.
People keep telling me we can.
But telling isn't showing.
So I started looking.
I wanted to find evidence that humanity can recognize a destructive pattern and change direction.
Not pledges.
Not promises.
Not targets.
Evidence.
I started with one of the clearest examples I knew.
The ozone layer.
In the 1970s, scientists established that chemicals we were using could destroy stratospheric ozone. In 1987, countries adopted the Montreal Protocol. The world dramatically phased down the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances.
The ozone layer is now on a path toward recovery.
That's real.
That's collective action at planetary scale.
It worked.
Then I looked elsewhere.
Some fisheries have recovered under effective management.
Species have been brought back from the brink of extinction.
Forests have returned in some places.
Renewable energy is being deployed at enormous scale.
Damaged ecosystems have been restored.
There is evidence.
I'm not denying that.
In fact, I went looking for it.
The question is whether it adds up to a civilization changing direction.
Because the ozone problem had something many of our current problems don't.
A relatively identifiable group of chemicals.
An increasingly clear cause.
International agreement about what needed to be phased out.
And alternatives that could replace much of what we were using.
Climate is different.
Biodiversity is different.
Soil is different.
Fresh water is different.
Oceans are different.
Insects are different.
These aren't problems caused by one chemical or one industry.
They're entire systems.
And they're connected to almost everything we do.
Energy.
Agriculture.
Transportation.
Housing.
Mining.
Manufacturing.
Consumption.
Trade.
The way we build our economies.
The way we define progress.
So I started asking harder questions.
Are total global greenhouse gas emissions declining in a sustained way?
Are extinction risks reversing globally?
Are insect populations stabilizing?
Are forests recovering faster than we're losing and degrading them?
Are depleted fisheries recovering across the world's oceans?
Are soils being regenerated at the scale they're being degraded?
Are freshwater systems becoming healthier globally?
Those are harder questions.
Because there are successes.
There are places where things are getting better.
There are technologies moving faster than I expected.
There are ecosystems recovering because people decided to protect them.
I can see that evidence.
But I can also see the larger pattern.
We're still taking more than we're giving back.
We're still treating nature like a resource instead of a relationship.
And we haven't yet demonstrated that ecological recovery is happening globally at the scale and speed the problem demands.
We've proven something important.
We can solve environmental problems.
We can cooperate across borders.
We can change industries.
We can regulate destructive technologies.
We can restore damaged ecosystems.
We can bring species back.
That's not nothing.
It might be some of the most important evidence we have.
But we've also demonstrated something else.
Delay.
Scientists have been warning about human-caused climate change for decades.
We've understood biodiversity loss for decades.
Soil degradation.
Freshwater depletion.
Ocean acidification.
Habitat destruction.
We've known.
And still, we wait.
We debate.
We negotiate.
We set targets.
We move deadlines.
We make incremental changes.
Sometimes they work.
Sometimes they don't.
Sometimes they're nowhere close to the scale of the problem.
That's what I keep coming back to.
Maybe the pattern isn't that we're incapable of solving problems.
Maybe the pattern is that we wait until the cost of not acting becomes greater than the cost of changing.
And with planetary systems, that's a dangerous way to learn.
Because some things don't come back.
An extinct species doesn't return because we finally reached political consensus.
A thousand-year-old ecosystem can't simply be reconstructed on an election cycle.
Carbon doesn't disappear from the atmosphere because we changed a target.
Nature doesn't care when our deadline is.
So here's what I'm looking for.
I want to see global emissions actually declining.
Sustained.
Measurable.
I want to see extinction risk actually reversing across the living world.
I want to see forests, soils, fisheries and freshwater systems recovering at planetary scale.
Not only isolated victories.
A change in direction.
I want to see us measuring success by something more than how much we produce and consume.
And I want to see us acting together instead of waiting for someone else to go first.
That's what would change my mind.
And if that evidence appears, I'll accept it.
Because this was never about wanting to be right.
I would rather be wrong.
I don't know if we can do it.
I don't know if we have the time.
I don't know if we have the will.
But I know what I'm looking for.
